Forum: texts Subject: Re: CBS Evening News airs news piece about Brewster and The Archive

This is a great story. However, let us not ignore the situation in public libraries. Libraries were also meant to be the archives and preservation institutions for books. Today our public libraries have quickly become blockbusters, where 90% or more of the items they circulate are CD or DVD copies of popular music and movies. It is a shame that it is being left to the archive to preserve these works while billions of dollars of taxpayer's money are being paid to library institutions whose main function now seems to be the destruction of our intellectual history and the support of the perpetration of a degenerate popular culture through the purchase of entertainment videos, audio tracks and video games. It is not true as the woman in the video states that books are being discarded to make place for other books. Historical books are being discarded to make space for entertainment materials and space for so-called social activities. All is not well in academia and our public libraries and ignoring that fact now that the Archive is saving our intellectual heritage does great damage to the public understanding of what the mission of libraries should be and how that mission contradicts what they are really doing, at least here in the United States.

This is the truth that we should see from the news media, our public libraries are rapidly becoming irrelevant as institutions for the preservation of knowledge and intellectual history and merely turning into another honeypot for public employees to suck the life blood out of the taxpayers. In the college classes which I currently teach, students use the library predominantly for Internet access and entertainment. What then is the reason today, for the existence of a public library when the Archive will be performing their function as they rapidly discard their main reason for existing?
